How to Check When Your MOT Is Due — and Set a Reminder So You Never Forget

Drive a car with no valid MOT and you can be fined up to £1,000. There's no grace period, no warning letter from the DVLA, and "I forgot" is not a defence. The good news? Checking when your MOT is due takes about 30 seconds — and once you know the date, there's no reason ever to be caught out again.

When does your car actually need an MOT?

In England, Scotland and Wales, your car needs its first MOT once it's three years old, then once every year after that. (In Northern Ireland it's four years.) Miss that annual renewal and the certificate simply expires — the car doesn't tell you, and neither does anyone else.

How to check your MOT due date (free, 30 seconds)

You don't need paperwork or an account. Go to the government's free MOT checker on GOV.UK ("Check the MOT history of a vehicle"), type in your number plate, and it shows you:

    • The exact date your current MOT expires
    • The full MOT history — every pass, fail and advisory
    • The mileage recorded at each test

It comes straight from the DVSA's records, so it's the definitive answer. Worth doing right now for every vehicle on your drive.

When should you book the test?

You can have the MOT done up to one month (minus a day) before it expires and keep your existing renewal date. So if your MOT runs out on 15 August, you can test it any time from 16 July and the new certificate still runs to 15 August next year — you don't lose those weeks.

Leave it until the certificate has fully lapsed, though, and you can't legally drive the car to most places at all — bar a pre-booked test or a garage for repairs. A couple of weeks early is the sweet spot: enough time to fix anything that fails, no days wasted.

What happens if you miss it?

Short version: it gets expensive, fast.

    • Up to £1,000 fine for driving without a valid MOT.
    • Your insurance can be invalidated — so a single bump becomes a bill with several zeros.
    • You can't tax the car — road tax renewal needs a valid MOT.
    • Drive something with a dangerous defect and it's up to £2,500, three penalty points, and a possible ban.

We've covered the full breakdown — including the myths about "grace periods" — in what really happens if you miss your MOT. The headline: there is no grace period.

So why do so many people miss it?

Because nothing reminds you. Car tax gets a big red DVLA letter; your MOT mostly relies on you remembering a date from twelve months ago. Add a second car, a partner's car, or a renewal that lands while you're on holiday, and it's the easiest thing in the world to let slide — not through carelessness, but because it's one more invisible deadline in a life already full of them.

That's the real problem. It isn't their MOT. It's that the date lives in their head, and heads are unreliable storage.

The fix: put the date somewhere that reminds you

Get every renewal date out of your head and into something that nudges you before it matters, not after.

That's exactly what Home Concierge does. It tracks your MOT, road tax, insurance and service dates, then reminds you in good time — alongside everything else, from the boiler service to the passport that's quietly about to expire. One dashboard, one set of reminders, no mental load.
